Seminar: Ireland and the ICJ - Tuesday 26th July 2011

It was recently announced that Ireland is to accept the compulsory jurisdiction of the International Court of Jus-tice in The Hague. This informal seminar will consider the role of the ICJ and Ireland’s history with the Court, in particular its participation in the Nuclear Weapons cases, the Israeli Wall case and the Kosovo case. Also to be considered are the implications of Ireland submitting to compulsory jurisdiction and the reasons why it has de-layed for so long in taking this step.

Call for Papers: UCD PhD Workshop on Human Rights

The organising committee of the 2011 PhD Workshop on Human Rights in University College Dublin School of Law invites proposals for a workshop to be held 1st-2nd April on the theme of ‘The Legacy and Future of the ECHR: Evaluating Sixty Years of the European Human Rights Project’.


This interdisciplinary workshop seeks submissions from a legal, political, philosophical, socio-scientific or interdisciplinary perspective that critically evaluate the role of the European Convention on Human Rights over the past sixty years and the impact it will have on the future European landscape. This dynamic, intensive workshop aims to stimulate debate on both the successes and the limitations of the ECHR. The workshop will take a plenary form, with established academics specialist in the field acting as discussants to participants’ papers.


Applicants are asked to submit an abstract of no more than 400 words on their proposed papers. We are delighted to announce that selected papers will be published (subject to editorial review) in a special edition of the German Law Journal. In addition the Irish Society for International Law will present a prize for the best paper.


The deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday 11th February 2011. Successful applicants shall be notified no later than 2 weeks of this date.

Abstracts should be submitted to Kanstantsin Dzehtsiarou and Alan Greene at ucd.echr.conference@gmail.com.

Seminar: The Independence of Kosovo | 17th November 2010

This informal seminar will address the recent Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice concerning the legality of Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence. What exactly did the ICJ decide? What are the implications for other secessionist movements and territories?

Admission is free of charge to ISIL and ILA members; membership is available on the door.



5th July: Judicial Review in Asylum Cases: American and Irish Perspectives

On Monday 5th July 2010, ISIL will jointly host a seminar on 'Judicial Review in Asylum Cases: American and Irish Perspectives' in the Legal Education Centre in UCD. This event is jointly hosted by ISIL, UCD and Fordham University, New York and in association with the Irish Branch of the International Law Association.

The seminar will comprise two presentations. The first, on 'Judicial Review in Asylum Cases in the USA' will be led by Prof. Michael W. Martin (Fordham University). The second, on 'Judicial Review in Asylum Cases in Ireland' will be led by Colm O'Dwyer BL. There will be time for discussion and the event will be chaired by Mr. Justice John D. Cooke of the High Court.

The seminar will begin at 4.30pm. Admission is free but places are limited, so please email info@isil.ie to reserve your place. CPD certificates (1 point) will be available on request.

We hope to post a video of the Seán Lester Lecture, delivered recently by Patricia O'Brien (UN Under-Secretary for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Counsel), very soon. 



Until then, we have posted a video of Prof. Vaughan Lowe delivering the 2007 Seán Lester Lecture on the topic of 'The Double-Edged Sword: International Law in Domestic Courts'.
